Welsh, Ex-Catholic and ‘Overdramatic’

Ciara Williams is a Welsh artist, raised in Ystradgynlais, and currently studying at The University of Wales, Trinity Saint David in Swansea.

Williams started her practise with oil painting and studying the human form. She has also experimented with photography, finding an importance in the everyday visuals that we tend to skip over.

Her practise serves as a response and sometimes a protest of topics such as misogyny, far right indoctrinations (and similar sub groups such as incels), war, politics, social media and voyeurism.

However in more recent years, her practise has revolved around how technology and machinery effect the everyday life, and the obscurity of the human self through digital spaces.

‘When focusing on topics of misinformation and its damaging effects to how we perceive the world around us, I pondered the possibility of truth; unburdened, uncalculated honesty ever having a chance to exist in an online space. The act of documenting a subject will never be a proper substitute for the real thing. This led me to think quite simplistically at the idea of trying to capture yourself in its entirety using technology, how the captured image becomes its own entity, and how we end up further from the true nature of the subject; which often is ourselves.’ - Ciara Williams
